Considering therapy?

Are you curious about therapy? Thinking about starting your journey, or simply want to understand what therapy truly is? At Place Beyond Therapy Therapeutic Services, we are here to help you explore if therapy, especially art psychotherapy, is the right path for you. We aim to provide clear, helpful information so you can make an informed decision and feel safe asking questions.

Your questions about therapy answered

Understanding if therapy is right for you means exploring your expectations and readiness. This page is designed to help you navigate those initial thoughts and feelings, ensuring you feel informed and comfortable before taking the next step. Therapy is a commitment to personal growth, and we are here to guide you through that process.

How much do I need to talk about?

Our therapy is person- centred, non-directive which basically means the therapist does not tell you what to talk about. Therapy is a collaborative process, and you are always in control of what you share. We will work at your pace, exploring topics as and when you feel ready. There is no pressure to disclose everything at once.

Do you interpret the art I create?

The short answer is no!

In art psychotherapy, the art you create is a powerful tool for self-expression and understanding. We do not interpret your art for you; instead, we explore together what your creations mean to you, empowering you to discover your own insights.

How long does therapy go on for?

To be completely transparent  - there is no way of knowing how long the sessions will need to last. Individual and group therapy and creativity for well-being sessions are individually tailored but certain services have a specific duration -

Pre-therapy sessions: 6 sessions

Post-therapy sessions: up to 6 sessions (ideally 3 sessions)

For all the services we will discuss this during our initial consultation and regularly review your progress to ensure therapy continues to be beneficial for you.

Is therapy for people in crisis?

While therapy can offer support during difficult times, it is not primarily for immediate crisis intervention. Therapy is most effective when you are ready to engage in self-exploration and commit to working on personal growth rather than purely addressing acute crises.

It is not uncommon for people to feel that things (thoughts/emotions/feelings) can feel 'worse' before it gets better which is one of the main reasons why it is not advised for individuals in crisis.

What if I'm not good at art?

No artistic skill or experience is required for art psychotherapy. The focus is on the process of creation and self-expression, not on producing a masterpiece. All forms of expression are welcomed!

What should I expect in my first session?

The first session is an introduction to the space, the time and opportunity for the client and therapist to begin to get to know each other. You are not expected to talk about anything in-depth unless you feel ready/comfortable.
